San Andrés Island is a small rocky island of about 1.5 hectares, in the shape of a whale. It’s made up of two islets (the “big” one and the “little” one), found beside the municipality of Carboneras, some 400 metres from the Playa de la Puntica. It’s volcanic origins gives it a rugged look, both above and below the water, where you can see the remains of a small volcanic crater, and numerous cracks and caves that house an important number of marine life, such as groupers, blue-damsel fish, hogfish, ballan wrasse, mojarra fish, bream and barracudas. It’s a wonderful place for diving.
It’s proximity to the coast and low-lying nature make it great for nests, whilst its isolation makes it a perfect feeding place for sea-gulls, terns and sea swallows. Being surrounded by a considerable amount of vidriera seaweed lends a dark tone to the clean, clear waters.
