Sierra María Los Vélez Nature Reserve
Location: North of Almeria, on the border with Murcia.
Getting there: From Vélez Rubio, on the N-342.
Surface area: 18,962 hectares.
Over 22,500 hectares, the Nature Reserve Sierra María-Los Vélez is found at the extreme north of the province of Almeria, between the municipalities of María, Chirivel and Vélez Blanco.
An area characterised by low winter temperatures, the presence of important forest areas and enormous biological wealth. It was a settlement for man in primitive times, as testified by the numerous Palaeolithic and Neolithic archaeological settlements in the Cueva Ambrosio and the Cerro de las Canteras, together with the presence of cave paintings, such as those found in Cueva de los Letreros, in which the symbol-figure of Almeria, the indalo, can be seen.
Its natural resources have traditionally been dry agriculture and livestock in the shape of the Segureña sheep, wood, more recently tourism, and, prominently, the collection and treatment of aromatic plants.
