Río de Aguas y Karst en Yesos de Sorbas

Thousands of years of rain water on the gypsum at the depression at Sorbas (Almeria) has created a subterranean landscape which is completely unique, and is only comparable to those found Podolia (Ukraine) and Bologna (Italy). In this Almerian environment, located in a sub-desert area, there are more than 1,000 cavities –some of which are absolutely spectacular – excavated in the gypsum, with kilometres of corridors full of stalactites and stalagmites that, because they’re made of crystal rock, reflect the light which visitors have in their helmets.
The effect of the artificial light on the rock crystal and the random natural shapes produce a fantastic, almost unreal, sight which is impossible to see anywhere else.
Thel ‘Karst Beauty Spot in Yesos de Sorbas’ has been an officially protected site since 1989, and only the company Natur Sport Sorbas has the right to carry out any type of activity in the area, such as the speleological excursions designed to visit various routes.

Depending on the the visitor, there are five established routes: three for individuals and groups and two especially focused on teaching centres.

The basic route is not too difficult, meaning both children and adults can do it.

The technical route is more difficult; the whole route is in the Cueva del Tesoro, the most important from Karst en Yeso because of the spectacular nature and size of the crystals. In some dangerous stretches the visitor is equipped with a harness and uses a rope to scale a few metres. It usually takes around four or five hours.
