Natural characteristics
The unique natural wealth, culture and landscape of the Sierra Nevada massif makes this one of the most interesting Andalusian nature areas. Sierra Nevada has peaks of over 3,000 m, making it the highest massif in Western Europe, after the Alps: the Mulhacén Peak (3,481m) is the ceiling of the Iberian Peninsula. There are numerous glacial lakes around it, with the highest being the Laguna de Altera, at 3,146m. Declared a Natural Park in 1989, it also takes in Almeria and Granada.
